Friday Fun Facts 4: Earth Day

Whatever side you sit on with the whole Global Warming Debate, you cannot argue that conservation and more efficient use of our natural resources is a GREAT thing. OK, I admit - I joined Ecology Club in high school because of a girl, but I do care about the environment.

With Earth Day being celebrated on Sunday, I only thought it fitting I share some interesting environmental facts with you this weekend:

Recycling: Recycling just ONE alumnium can saves enough energy to power a TV for about three hours. (So that means the average fraternity house has about 18,000 hours worth of TV power inside of it).

Power: The average air conditioner uses 98% more energy than ceiling fans. (And with the costs of energy going up, you're going to have to recycle aluminum cans to help pay for running that A/C).

Water: 1/3 of all household water usage comes from flushing the toilet. (So die-hard environmentalists like Leonardo DiCaprio refuse to flush, but keep their loot to themselves).

Garbage: Each person throws away approximately FOUR pounds of garbage a day. (I bet computer geeks are responsible for ten times that. You ever notice the amount of cardboard, plastic, and packing foam that's leftover when you unpack your new gadget?)

Plastics: It can take 300 years for plastic to break down in a landfill. (That means Michael Jackson will be preserved forever).

I haven't flushed a toilet in years. I just drive across the country in adult diapers.

Yes! Adult diapers. All the greatest minds are wearing them while driving cross country.

I think Depends should pick up on this trend.

david amulet are you an astronaut? :P

WOW that's crazy about the aluminum cans. That reminds me... time to go to the bottle depot.

The toilet thing just reminds me of "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" lol

Well it is good to know that so many more generations will get to enjoy the tragedy that is Michael Jackson. Where is the King of Plastic Surgery these days?

Happy Earth Day everyone. Who killed the electric car? Might it have been... SATAN. Or was that George Bush? Same difference.

We live in a sea of energy. The need for fossil fuels has nothing to do with necessity and everything to do with control.

The day is coming very soon when I will plug my car into a solar panel and tell Putin, Chavez, and King Fahd to kiss my green grits.

That will really be a Happy Earth Day.

my college roommate was big into recycling and that's what made me into it. i'm from wisconsin and the state does really good at recycling, until chicago sends up their garbage.

Fated: I fly through space, yes. But I'm not in NASA--I wasn't quite psycho enough to fit in with what's-her-name.

>>I joined Ecology Club in high school because of a girl<<

I joined the Young Democrats for the beer.

Dems are big recyclers, though.

I wonder what the statistics are for why males join any after-school club in high school.

I think if it was made more convient to re-cycle over here more people would. I dont have transport , wp would laugh in my face if I asked him to drive me to a recycling place.

It makes me rather sad( and annoyed) when I throw plastics , can & papers into the regular trash but I dont know what else to do!

In the UK we had 3 different coloured trash bags black for reglar food waste. Pink for plastic and cans and green for paper, card and clothing.
One week the trash men would pick up the black & green bags the next week the black & pink bags.
We also had brown bins that were collected every 2 weeks (in the summer) for garden waste and a glass collection too.

Now why cant they do something like that here ?
[/and so endeth the rant :) ]

I recycle all that I can. (paper, metals, plastics...)
I compost food wastes
and I throw the rest of my refuse over the fence into my neighbors yard...

and as for electric cars, where do you think the electricity comes from? THe electricity fairy? Have you considered the envirnmental impact of changing out a bank of deep celled batteries every year? We have electical vehicles where I work. They each have twelve batteries. Do the math...

First off, I love that picutre of the toilet with the smiley poop face in it. Very cute. ;)

And The PK and I have recently started recycling plastic, aluminum and glass. Not only does it help the environment...but it made me realize "Holy crap...we drink A LOT OF BEER, don't we????"
