Spooky Story Four: The Mothman Returneth

Last year, I did a spooky post on The Mothman. It's probably one of my best scary stories, and I get a lot of hits from people Googling The Mothman everyday. You can find my original post HERE. The question now is...have there been other Mothman sites lately?

For those too lazy to read my first post, and for those who need a refresher, The Mothman is a winged creature, standing about 7 feet tall, and has bright red eyes. There were literally hundreds and hundreds of reports of encounters and sightings with this flying thing near Point Pleasant, West Virginia from 1966 - 1967.

The reports made national news, as Mothman sightings kept coming in, along with sightings of UFOs all over the place. It is here in Point Pleasant where the infamous Men in Black first made their public appearance as well.

Townspeople also reported that they were having psychic visions and dreams. Basically, it was a weird time for Mount Pleasant that eventually ended in disaster. The Silver Bridge collapsed on December 15, killing 46 people. And immediately after, sightings of The Mothman abruptly came to a hault.

Since 1967, there have been worldwide reports of this Mothman appearing prior to major disasters:

* People reported seeing the Mothman just days before the Mexico City earthquake in 1985.

* There have been many interviews in Chernobyl from those that said they saw a winged man-creature, right before the nuclear reactor disaster in 1986.

* Minutes after the Twin Towers' destruction on September 11th, 2001, observers reported seeing "winged, flying men" flying near both towers. The picture (at left and right) shows that the flying creature is much too big to be any kind of bird.

* Newspapers in Tbilissi, Georgia wrote about how some guy said he got information from a "winged phantom" concerning the Church of St. David being in danger. Soon thereafter, there was a major earthquake striking Tbilissi on April 25, 2002. The church suffered massive damage.

* Months after the Tbilissi quake, Chinese citizens reported seeing The Mothman. Shortly after reporters published their stories, a Chinese MD-82 in the northeastern part of China. There were further reports from people saying they knew the plane was going to crash because of information given to them by "a man that looked like a moth."

* There are reports all over the world, even in Afghanistan and Iraq.

So what is The Mothman and why does it seem to follow major disasters? Is it trying to warn us of impending doom? Or is there something sinister involved? Or perhaps, it's simply the human imagination trying to cope with tragedy.

Although the tragedy of Mount Pleasant was 40 years ago, it seems the myth of The Mothman is still one that captures our attention and our imagination. Whatever you believe, catch Sci Fi investigates this Wednesday night, as the crew goes to Mount Pleasant, WV to investigate The Mothman (Sci Fi Channel).

I was in Charleston, WV this summer and no one would take me on the hour drive to Mount Pleasant. As one local resident told me, "For us, it's all very real Too real." For those that live in the area, The Mothman represents a very scary and uncertain time in their town's history.

Considering he's a Mothman, wouldn't you think he'd just 'go into the light'?

I'm sure I'll watch the show too. :)

The Sci Fi Investigates is a fantastic show. They bring together four people from four different backgrounds. One's an archeologist, another is a CSI technician, another is a paranormal investigator, and the fourth is this loud-mouthed, obnoxious skeptic from Boston.

The skeptic from Boston cracks me up, as he tried to recreate recent Bigfoot footage, and soon learned that if you run in a big-ass and hairy suit in the woods, you will fall and break your neck.

So...if the Mothman is nearby...where's The Tick at?

The Mothman stories frankly scare the poop out of me. So...call me when we're done with him.

You know, to this day, Mothman Prophecies is one of the scariest movies I ever saw. I had nightmares for weeks. I think it's mostly because of the whole bridge phobia. But the whole idea of it was very creepy.

You should send that picture to the CSI people. You know they have those fantastic computers that can zoom in and clean up the image to perfect clarity.

Well... I saw them do it on TV....

The Mothman Prophecies is a pretty good movie, WAY better than I thought it was going to be.

They did a good job showing all the weird psychological phenomena that happened. But they took out all the UFO and Men in Black stuff.

They also reduced the number of people that die from the bridge collapsing in order to make it less tragic.

I'm such a chicken-shit. When The Boy rented that movie a while back, I refused to watch it because I knew I'd not be able to sleep that night.

Scary stuff.

I saw lots of flying debris on September 11th in the sky. None of it ever struck me as flying people. The people I did see in the sky definitely were unable to fly. Unfortunately.

I'm not surprised that Mothman made his first appearance in the 60s. Except I didn't think there were a bunch of pot-smoking hippies in W. Va. back then. But I could be wrong!

I usually don't believe in stuff like this, but it strikes me that he may be an angel. You know, whenever you hear about angels, they always say to their witness, "Don't be afraid." Well, nobody would be afraid of the standard Michaelangelo angel.

Yeah I think I agree with "Goddess", this story really does strike a chord with me as well, especially the parts about September 11th and about MothMan showing up just before a major disaster strikes.

That picture freaks me out.

Great entry Phoenix

I saw the show. First reaction was, "is that the guy from Survior? What the hell is he doing there?!?"

I think it proved conclusively that people thought the saw something.

uhmmmms I live in Wv and its Point Pleasant not Mount Pleasant lol

Its a very creepy place all the people that lived through that time are very reluctant to recall their experiences. Wv has soo many dark stories from the past I live by Shepardstown and Harpers Ferry and theres literally hundreds of stories just from this area. I was a skeptic untill I strted investigating stuff with friends. Weve literally seen a ghost priest, blood on steps in HF that dissapeared as we were taking pics, mutilated animals with 6 claw marks that werent eaten just left, Ufos that change colors and shape, a huge black dog with red eye in a graveyard sitting on a grave from 200 yrs ago, even "we think" we crossed paths with a lycan on the mountain in the woods(our german shepherd chased it and we heard a bloodcurdling howl and trees shaking and he ran back and literally jumped through a screen door to get back in the house)- the same night we had the window open some(it was summer) and we heard something walking back and forth snorting under the window. We even have some videos of some of the stuff but it scared us so bad we taped them in a box put them in an attic and weve all been to scared to view them(were now 21-23 yrs old) since we were 16.

To all naysayers- i know your probably going to say this is all crap but its not and im not just trying to be popular by lying. One day we may look back at the tapes but for now they scare us too much to do anything.

If your ever in WV take a good hrd look around you. You never know what youll see.

PS- In a seperate story- one of my best friends grandmother(now passed)had a truck from when we were in 5th grade and swore till her dying day that she was trapped in her truck by bigfoot like creature. Her and Js grandfather were hunting and heard a gruwl that followed them back to their truck dropping their guns and supplies. When they came back in the daylight their rifle had been bent in half and clawmarks were deep in the paint from the door to the tailgate...She shook even years later while telling the story. Am i saying it was for sure bigfoot? no. But it had to be something large and powerful to leave marks like that and to leave a 30.06 bent in half.

Moral of these stories- Be careful what you look for because you never know what could be looking for you...

If youd like place references or are interesting in checking these places out(these are but a few) please contact wvboarder2005@aol.com I will respond to serious inquiries and/or give full accounts to these and others of those interested.
